FEEDING YOUR BABY? NO WORRIES!

Breastmilk or infant formula is the first baby food that the little angel consume. It has the nutrition that a newborn baby needs. However, it is recommended for baby to eat solid food after 6 months old. There are lots of consideration to make while feeding your baby on solid food. There are sign that your child is developmentally ready. The first sign of feeding solid food is when your child had good head and body control (can sit without support). Other than that, when your child opens his or her mouth and leans forward when food is offered, he or she might be ready too.

Experts recommend that parents could feed their baby on new food every three days. They should also watch closely for the signs of allergic reaction and avoid choking hazards. Let’s have a deeper consideration about feeding your baby. Solid food provides a more natural and nutritious for baby compare to milk.

What are the consideration when you feed your baby?

1. Preparation of the food

Preparation of the baby’s food is important to prevent choking and nutrient consuming. In the beginning, it is easier for your child to eat foods that are mashed, strained, pureed or smooth in texture. It is easier for your child to accept the new food textures with these preparations. They might spit, cough or gag.

There are foods that are potentially choking hazard, therefore it is very important to have the right texture for your baby. To prevent choking, prepare foods that does not need to chew or can be easily dissolve by saliva. Feed a small portion for every mouthful to your baby to encourage he or she to eat slowly.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Parents could cook the food to the softest texture and smash it.
  • Remove fats, skin and bones from meat or fish before cooking.
  • Remove seed from fruits and cooked them until it is soft enough for baby to consume.
  • Cut small spherical food such as tomatoes into small pieces.

2. Introduction of food to your child

Children or infant require certain vitamins and mineral to say healthy. Therefore, you wouldn’t wish that your children are a picky eater. Try to introduce new food to your children in a correct way. Let your children try one food at a time. Do not force it when they refuse to eat as it might be the food texture problem that might cause choking.

Parents should also check out on the allergy reaction on their child. Wait 3 to 5 days between each new food to make sure that they are not allergic to the food. Food allergy can cause lots of problems such as hives, itching, vomiting, coughing and more. The most common food allergic are against milk or dairy product, peanuts and shellfish.
