What is mucus? Mucus is a mixture of antibodies and white immune cells. It is essential for body function and acts as a protective layer to trap dust, smoke, or bacteria and moisturizing layer to keep critical organs from drying out. 

However, if the production of mucus is increased or the quality of mucus has changed, it might indicate different illnesses and conditions. 

It is important to understand the indication of our mucus to stay alert about our healthcare.

What is the mucus trying to tell us?

1. White mucus

When the stuff in your nose may get thicker and look white, it can be a sign that your body is pumping out white blood cells to fight infection such as a cold. 

The swollen, irritated nasal tissue could be caused by allergies or dehydration.

2. Green or yellow mucus

Green or yellow mucus usually signs that you have an infection like flu or cold. The green color comes from a protein released from our inflammatory cells. If the color stays green for more than 12 days, you should visit a doctor as it could be a sinus infection.

The yellow mucus comes from dead white blood cells. It means that your body is trying to fight a cold or infection. You don't necessarily need to see a doctor but you may feel sick.

3. Red or pink mucus

If you’re sick and coughing a lot, the red or pink mucus can come from broken blood vessels in your nose or throat. The nasal tissue may be dry, irritated, or damaged.

In some critical cases, it might be a sign of cancer.

4. Brown or black mucus

Brown and black mucus often happen to the adults who are a smoker or surrounded by dust at their job. 

This type of mucus also shows up in people with chronic lung disease. The color comes from a mix of blood and inflammation in the lungs.

Parents should pay attention to the color of mucus of their baby to check on their health. Baby and infant normally encounter white and yellow mucus only.
