WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CLEANING, SANITATION, DISINFECTANT AND STERILIZATION ?

As the Covid-19 Pandemic has brought a huge impact to health, life and economy, it increased the awareness of people or countries regarding health and hygiene.

Other than staying at home, people start to ensure a good personal hygiene to prevent the infection of the decease. For example, people start to wash their hands more frequently than before.

Although washing our hands is a most effective way of keeping clean,  but not all object are suitable for washing. For example, we are unable to clean an electrical appliances with water. Some microorganism might be really difficult to get rid of with just water. Therefore, human start to invent a lot of other way such as sanitizing, sterilizing and disinfection.

What are the difference between cleaning, sanitation, sterilization and disinfection ?

1. Cleaning

Cleaning is a process of removing visible organic and inorganic material from the objects and surfaces such as soil, dirt, and more. Cleaning is normally accomplished by manually or mechanically using water with detergent or enzymatic product.

However, cleaning process doesn't necessarily kill germs, but it removes them. It reduce their numbers and the risk of spreading infection.

2. Sanitation

Sanitizing is a process to lower the number of germs on surfaces or object to a safe level which cannot be guarantee in the process of cleaning.

A sanitizing process can kill at least 99.9% of germs on hard surface. Therefore it is convenient for us to bring a hand sanitizer along to keep hygienic all the time. However, washing our hands is still recommended because sanitizing doesn't remove dirt or other impurities and it only kill germs.

3. Disinfection

Disinfection process destroys or inactivates both the bacteria and viruses on hard, nonporous surfaces. It is one of the most reliable ways to lower the risk of spreading germs from surfaces by touch.

The difference between sanitation and disinfection is that sanitizers only have claims for bacteria, while disinfectants have claims against both bacteria and viruses on hard surfaces. If sanitation can remove 99.99% of germs, disinfectant can remove 99.999% of germs.

Ultraviolet (UV) lights are commonly use in a sterilization process. Most medical and surgical devices used in healthcare facilities will normally be sterilize by UV lights.

As Covid-19 Pandemic occurs, UV lights are more often used as sterilization for certain equipments or things that were constantly exposed to the outer world. For example, keys, wallet, phone and more. The benefit of using UV light is that it does not contain high temperature and chemical. However, it could harm human skin if we expose too much to the UV light.
